The ecopolyethylene project that could revolutionize waste collection

Polyethylene waste is a very important resource thanks to its characteristic of being entirely recyclable.

In this regard, Ecopolietilene, the consortium for the management of polyethylene goods, has carried out a project in collaboration with Ecolight Servizi and the Piedmontese company STR to monitor separate waste collection in urban areas and, in particular, hard plastic waste that is transferred to the ecological islands, since four out of ten are polyethylene goods.

Through this project, Ecopolietilene has set itself three objectives: to quantify this particular type of waste in urban areas, to identify possible new ways of separate collection of polyethylene goods and to favor their recovery and recycling according to the logic of the circular economy.

The initiative, which took place between April and October 2021, involved four ecological islands managed by STR, where 1720 kg of hard plastic waste were analyzed and divided into macro categories. The analysis showed that in the plastic bins there were light rigid packaging, fruit and vegetable boxes, foreign waste and, finally, polyethylene goods.

Ecopolietilene has therefore decided to place special containers for the collection of rigid plastic and, at the end of the test period, a zeroing of incorrect deliveries and an increase in the quality of the collection were recorded: eight out of ten wastes were polyethylene goods.

The next step will be to spread the importance of this type of waste: it is a real resource of great environmental value, which if reintroduced into the production cycles of many objects can decrease the consumption of raw materials and pollution.
