SCENA (Short-Cut Enhanced Nutrient Abatemen) and SCEPPHAR (Short-Cut Enhanced Phosphorus and PHA Recovery) are the technologies that allow respectively to reduce energy consumption, recovering sludge rich in phosphorus in purifiers, and that allow to produce up to 1 kg daily of polyhydroxyaclanoatic acid, from cellulose derived from toilet paper usually present in wastewater.
These technologies, developed in the Carbon Plant belonging to the Alto Trevigiano Servizi, have been realized on an industrial and pilot scale by the University of Verona and the Polytechnic University of Marche Region. A project entitled Horizon 2020 “Smart-plant”, funded by the EU, to convert the purification plants into bio-refineries to recover phosphorus, methane and bioplastics from wastewater.
An important and virtuous challenge, which is part of the so-called circular economy and which aims to limit energy waste and greenhouse gas emissions from purification plants.
