Also Italy has joined the European Plastic Pact, the European Pact on Plastics initially set up in 2019 by France and the Netherlands to encourage the reuse and recycling of plastic, and which will aim to reduce the use of virgin plastic produced from non-renewable fossil fuel. It was necessary, in order to strengthen the practical idea of a common sharing between European countries, which will therefore contribute to the same objective: better use of plastics and control the path from production to recycling, to manage the effect of the material on the environment.
Together with Italy and most EU countries (from Latvia to Germany, Portugal to Denmark), also several companies and NGOs. Among the targets: a reduction of at least 20% in virgin plastic products and packaging, a 25% increase in the collection and recycling capacity of plastic packaging, a 30% increase in the use of recycled plastic in packaging.
Already in 2019, the EU banned disposable plastics such as plates, glasses, cutlery and straws, which together accounted for as much as 70% of the waste in our seas. This new pact will be decisive not only for international cooperation between countries, but also between industrial players. Moreover, numbers at hand, it will finally be possible to record and quantify the development of a circular economy, more necessary than ever in this historical period.
