European funds to clean up a former landfill in Rome

EnvironmentEUpile of garbage in landfill

The former Malagrotta landfill is located in the extreme western outskirts of Rome and is the largest landfill in Europe, closed in 2013 but never reclaimed.

For this reason, the Lazio region risks receiving a very steep penalty from the European Court of Justice. To avoid the maxi European fine, 250 million euros were allocated, deriving from European funds, following weeks of intense synergistic work between the Lazio region and the Council of Ministers.

The funding will be made available by the Ministry of Ecological Transition through the Cohesion and Development Fund. At the head of the project there will be a Single Commissioner: Giuseppe Vadalà, the brigadier general of the forest police. A highly specialized task force will work with him through a precise timeline that foresees the end of the works by 2025.

There are many actions needed to be carried out on this site, in particular it will be necessary to build new wells to extract the leachate to be treated. Subsequently, it will be necessary to proceed with the final surface cover and the environmental arrangement of the former landfill.
