The municipal council of Livorno has authorized the submission of the request for funding to the investment fund of the smaller islands by the island of Gorgona.
Gorgona is requesting a loan of 684 thousand euros to modernize the civil wastewater collection and purification system in order to preserve the natural environment (land and sea).
Gorgona presents itself as a pilot of a circular economy project thanks to interventions for the environmental and energy enhancement of the island, as well as an innovative project for environmental sustainability. The goal of the project is the construction of an infrastructure capable of phyto-purification of wastewater to irrigate the land and, at the same time, recover the nutrients to be used as compost. The project also plans to cover the energy needs of the plant with renewable sources, thus making the system carbon neutral. Thanks to the interventions on the circular economy envisaged by the project, the island’s electricity production could become carbon free.
