The start-up “H2 Green Steel” is part of the project promoted by the European Green Hydrogen Acceleration Center (EGHAC), a development center led by EIT InnoEnergy, an institute created by the European Union to accelerate technological innovation, and financially supported by Breakthrough Energy, a fund created by Bill Gates to foster the ecological transition.

The start-up will build in northern Sweden the world’s first fossil-free industrial-scale steel plant, replacing the fossils with green hydrogen.

This is a 2.5 billion euro investment project, which will create 10,000 direct and indirect jobs. The start of large-scale production is scheduled for 2024 and the company’s goal is to produce 5 million tons of high-quality steel annually by 2030.

Green hydrogen is a high potential element for transforming Europe’s energy, industrial and transport sectors, as well as a way of decarbonizing energy-intensive industries such as the steel one.

H2 Green Steel is the first project to initiate the decarbonization of steel and the hydrogen economy, which is essential for achieving the climate goals of the European Union.
